I too went with Google Voice (GV), and like dmz789qqq, use the Polycom OBi200 adapter. The adapter accepts an ethernet connection from your router/cable modem and supplies a phone-compatible output line. I plugged the phone line into the wall phone jack for distribution throughout our home.
Assuming you wish to keep your 40-year old heritage phone number, there are some intermediate steps. You'll need to perform a two-step porting process:
1) Using a cheap mobile phone that can accept a SIM card, port your landline number to a temporary account set up with a mobile carrier. I purchased a Nokia 225 4G phone (about $30) and selected a month-to-month plan from Ting.
2) After the port has been confirmed and verified, port it again from the mobile carrier to GV.
3) After verifying that GV works, cancel your temporary mobile carrier - and sell your cheap phone.
4) GV doesn't include E911 service. I added that on afterwards... my choice was ANVEO (about $25/yr).
5) There is also a one-time payment to GV ($20) to make your ported-in number permanent. Don't forget to do that.
I keep my router/cable modem, OBi200, and hands-free telephone base station all continuously powered through a UPS. That gives me a finite amount of uptime in the event of a power outage.
The only downside is that GV is not compatible with incoming fax service. But I haven't had to receive a fax since the first decade of this century (PDF scans via email are much better). What I really like about GV is that it pre-screens my calls.
