Thanks for the quick replies.
It turns out this killed the battery, to leave it all winter connected. Haven't started the car yet, but upon touching the cables to the battery, I saw the LED light up, so that's a good sign.
I soaked the ends of the cables in water + baking soda and that got rid of some of the battery acid in white form on the negative terminal. It cleaned right off, but now the part of the cable end that used to be nice and silver looks more like a rust colour. I'm guessing there was a coating on the metal and now it's come off. Don't think that should matter too much?
Will give one more update when I start the car up
