My Mom had a new Alero rental car for a month. It appeared to be better than most American offerings, but the body panel gaps were irregular and wide. The switchgear felt cheap, the body flexed and creaked too much....and so on. This was a new car, only 2000 miles on it. I doubt it to be any better with age. My parents have kept other GM products for awhile (supposed "luxury cars" like a Park Ave) and they age terribly. Not too many breakdowns, per se. But early failures of AC compressors, brake master cylinders, etc.

In high school I drove a 27 year old Benz S-Class with over 250k miles on the 4.5L V8. That thing was a tank. More expensive to maintain, of course than a newer GM product. But it ALWAYS started on the first crank, and even limped 40 miles home when the valve guides of two cylinders failed, fouling them to the point where they wouldn't fire.

It's not so much poor engineering (inferior, but not poor), but crappy build quality that doom GM cars for rental fleets and older buyers like my parents who remember the "glory days" of American cars.
