I'm a long time Saab owner, I make a living selling Audis and VW's, and my dealership also carries Subaru and Nissan. I like a lot of things about Subarus, but I'm actually a little disappointed in how they drive in the snow. The Outbacks are actually closer to most sport utility vehicles in how they handle snow (GT Legacies might be better). In two or three feet of snow they're like a snowmobile--they'll go through anything. Unfortunately the things that make them good in deep snow (ground clearance, agressive tires) make them kind of squirelly on icy highways or hard packed roads. The Audi's aren't quite as good in three feet of snow (where ground clearance becomes an issue) but are truly superior on hardpacked or icy roads. Equiped with E.S.P. they are oblivioius to icy roads. But my Saab is better on icy roads than the Subaru, and better than the VW's with traction control, which my Saab doesn't have. The Audi's are definately better, but when you factor in the mechanical complexity, and the actual number of days that all wheel drive is an advantage here in Michigan, I'll stick with my Saab. My opinions are based on back to back comparisons in the worst snow conditions we've had in a decade.
