The strategic bombers used by the Allies (US and UK) also had turbo-
superchargers on their engines; otherwise they couldn't do their heavy
lifting up to 30,000 feet and higher as they did.
One of the most important developments for the fighter class was on the
P-51 Mustang. Originally a doggy plane with the original Allison engine,
the switchover to a Rolls Merlin with turbo/supercharging enabled it to be
the high altitude escort plane it became famous for.
The German FW-190's BMW radial engine had a water-methanol injection
system for emergency power.
