My Dad was on the market for a new car. The pale green '52 Chevy was getting a little on frumpy and slow side.
In those days, small town dealerships let you take them home for a week or more to try them on.
Dad took three cars home:
(a) an Austin - a big-as-they-got black one with a straight 6 (?), beautiful leather seats, shiny chrome, a 4-speed, 4 door hard-top as I recall. I'll never forget that smell. The next time I encountered anything like that smell was when I bought my '68 MGB.
(b) A Studebaker Golden Hawk - also black, V8 -4 bbl carb, but this time a 2-door hardtop. This was one damn fine-looking car and very, very fast. It had mini-tailfins just tastefully large enough and dual chrome-tipped exhaust. It was a little short on trunk room but it had a beautiful, long engine bonnet and a very sexy grille and lights appearance reminiscent of some Mercedes.
And finally (c) the deal-of-the-year (according to him) - a V8 2 bbl carb Dodge Custom Royal - robin's egg blue 4 door with an automatic lever on the dash (no radio). Oh, this was a pretty car and fast enough but I always wanted him to keep the Studebaker.
