Alfa Romeo recommends 10W-30 for the 1991 spider.... However, with the differential expansion of the steel cylinder liners and the aluminum engine block and heads, the 10W-30 leaks quite a bit. After talking to many local alfa service shops and restorers, the consensus seemed to be to use a 20-50 weight oil in the alfa engines. Since I like to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, 15W-50 is the closest choice to a traditional 20-50 dino oil.
And, yes, you are correct that the synthetic oils meet the same wide weight ranges without the use of (or at least as much) vicousity modifiers.
