I suspect they didn't mention the NG900 and 9^3, because it's not in anywhere near the same class as the Golf or Focus, even though the performance figures may be somewhat close between all three. The Saab, I believe (could be wrong) has a much larger interior than either of the other two. If I were in the market for a new car, the ZX5 would be among the top on my list (can't afford a new Saab - why I drive a '87 9000T), along with the Golf. I still like the older Saab though, for the better safety, larger size, and more luxury.
I've never understood the abandonment of the hatchback by the major automakers (primarily Japanese). Seems to me, most of the people who buy these 'economy' cars are because they can only afford one vehicle. I say, if you can only afford one, why not get the most functionality for your dollar? Having a small car that is not a hatchback (or wagon) as your only car, makes very little sense to me. But that's me..
I guess if I was more like the rest of the American car buying public, I wouldn't have a Saab, I'd be driving a full size pickup, Accord, or Camry.
