Berets are also associated with the French, artists, and beatniks but I believe the military association to be the strongest one overall. You need to have jam to wear a beret - to dare to be different, hence the committment by the USA to the beret, which has a solid military history.

I don't wear one but I do like hats, among which my Saab baseball cap is frequently worn while driving and walking. Perhaps the most amusing hat I wear while driving is my straw "Resistol" during the cowboy days of summer celebrated here in the west.
