In 1989, the top-of-the-line Volvo models were (a) 760 GLT with a sturdy 4-cyliner Volvo Turbo engine, and (b) 760 GLE with an new-generation but unreliable 6-cylinder "not my fault, blame the other guy" Peugeot-Renault-Volvo engine. Kind of reminds you of the current choice between the Saab 2.3t 4-cylinder engine vs the Opel/Vauxhall/GM 6-cylinder engine, although the latter seems to be quite reliable as well. I bought a new 760 GLT Turbo in 1989 because I didn't trust the 6-cylinder. The car has been driven sparingly (used as a 2nd car) and it is still running strong on original parts. During the original 4-year warranty period, the sunroof drive motor and an ignition switch were replaced. I have also replaced a battery, tires and a trunk strut but have decided not to replace a broken power antenna rod (motor is fine). That's it for 12 years but only 50,000 miles. If the 6-cylinder is as bad as its reputation, there shouldn't be too many 1989 760 GLE's around. You are looking at a GLT and it should be ok although the 1989 turbo's may not have the longevity of current Saab turbo's. Hope this helps.
