I looked at the Volvo, with mixed feelings. It was a 760 Turbo automatic, the engine compartment was clean, it had a new alternator and starter. The car ran well and shifted fine, but the brakes were 'spongy' and the body was nicked and scratched all over with bad respray in several areas.
ALso, some broken lenses, the drivers power seat didn't move forward or back, and the sunroof was inop. Some idiot lights on the dash were lit. This car basically didn't appear to be maintained too well. At $1800 (and the owner was willing to deal), it still wasn't a bad price, but I definitely smelled a money pit brewing that I definitely can't afford. Also, I live in Chicago and was less than enthused about rear wheel drive.
This might not be any better (costwise) in the long run, but instead of the Volvo I bought a REALLY clean, nice 1990 900S 5 speed hatch (black w/tan leather). I pick it up tomorrow, I'm excited. I really wanted a turbo, but this one seems like a deal, I couldn't pass it up (great body and interior, headliner fine, good tires and brakes, sunroof and windows work fine, about 150k miles). I am now once again a Saab owner (I've had an 85 SPG, 86 900S automatic 4 door and 87 900S 5 speed 4 door) WOOHOO.
