Like the other fellow said, a laser would work.
Another possable option is a strobe light meter, I don't know what they are called exactly. They work kind of likea timing light, remember what those are? Anyway, you pull the trigger and adjust the frequency of the strobe via the knob at the back. When the blades stop spinning you have the rpm. Or possably a mulitple of the speed, i.e. the gage is registering twice the actual rpm ( but then I would assume you already have an idea what the operating range of the props are).
