Actually we are using an electric propulsion system. The competition specifies that electric motors from Astroflight or Graupner have to be used...there are a lot of restrictions. Is it correct to say that every electric motor has a motor constant in rpm/volt? It is my understanding that electric motors want to hit a specific rpm at a specific voltage, and will pull as much current as they need to in order to achieve that, which is why you burn an electric motor out with too great of a load on it. I read that in an electric motor handbook...so I was thinking, if its true that we would only have to measure our motor's specific constant and we'd be all set since the instrumentation we have gives the voltage going to the motor. The problem with that is, what can we use that will spin the motor at a known rpm to measure the constant? Maybe somehow hook a drill up and use our cheapo hobby store optical tach to measure the constant once and then no tach setup is even needed in the wind tunnel?
Does that seem like a reasonable method, or am I missing something there? It would make things much easier...
