Dont jump to conclusions, whats law in one country doesnt mean its
law in another. And even if you think you know swedish law it does
pay to keep upto date with changes. I agree with what you mentioned
is the general rule, but there are lesser know exceptions to most rules.
Here's the traffic law in Sweden. These are new regulations that
were introduced in October 1999.
On roads of two lanes or more running in the same direction and
with a maximum speed of "70 kph or LOWER", the following applies:
. You are free to choose which lane to drive in and must then stay in it.
. You may overtake on the RIGHT
. you may switch lanes when overtaking and when intending to stop, park
or turn off the road.
This means that as long as you remain in your lane, your main concern
will be to keep an eye on the vehicles ahaed of you in the same lane.
And here is tha actual law quotes:
Ch. 3 s.7 (fourth para)
"...On a road where the maximum permitted speed is 70 kilometers
per hour or lower and where the carriageway has at least two lanes
for traffic running in the same direction as indicated by the road
markings, drivers may use whichever lane is most appropriate with regard
to their continued journey"
Ch. 3 s. 9
"...In cases covered by s.7, fourth para, drivers may not switch lanes
except in order to stop or park the vehicle, to overtake or to position
the vehicle in a suitable lane prior to turning off at a crossing."
Ch.3 s.31
"Overtaking shall be effected on the left, except in cases covered by s.7
fourth para. Overtaking is to be effected on the right, however, when the
driver of the vehicle in front is turning left or is clearly preparing to turn left."
So basically in Sweden, it makes it a driver free to choose which lane
he wants to drive in, but makes it harder to switch lane. But does technically do anway with tailgating on roads with a maximum speed of 70kph or slower.
Basically a driver if free to "undertake" if the road is a dual lane (or more) carriage way, and if the roads maximum speed limit is 70 kph or less.
Thats covers alot or motorways around built up areas, such as Stockholm.
