You make a very convincing argument. Others got the right answer,
but their arguments, if there were any, weren't as good, or funny,
as yours. People should remember that all mathematical models
are approximations, and often have some simplifying assumptions.
Mine was to approximate humans as cylindrical objects so that there
were only two simple surfaces to consider: the top (area of a circle)
and the front lateral surface (half the total lateral surface area). The
top circular area will receive a quantity of raindrops equal to the
product of the constant rate of rain, the circular area, and the time it
takes to get to said Saab (an Aero, no doubt). With a given rate and
circular area, the number of raindrops that will fall on this area is
solely a function of the time.
The lateral surface or "collision" surface, ie., that area that collides
into the rain due to running, is an entirely, as you noted, different
matter. If the rain is falling at a constant rate, then the density of
or concentration of raindrops in any given volume, at any particular
instant, or interval, of time will always be constant. For a given
distance which includes a certain volume of uniformly distributed
raindrops, one will collide with the same amount of drops regardless of the speed at which one travels. In other
words, as you say, the only factor one should consider is the top
circular (idealized) surface and the amount of time it is exposed to
the rain. By the way, are you sure you're not really Dave Barry?
