If you're fluent in a romance language, then I don't see the point of studying Latin formally. You'll recognize word roots right away. I don't know anything about law, but in medicine, Latin shows up everywhere. However, I wouldn't say that those in medical school who had learned Latin did any better. It's not like the lights went on for them when they learned about the "vastus lateralis", or that they remembered the location, function and pathology of the scaphoid bone because they knew that the word scaphoid is derived from the word for boat.
As far as what to study, my friends who are fluent in Spanish are able to get by in Italy, although I must say that Italian is the most beautiful language I have ever tried to speak. French is useful in eastern Canada, but I've heard that many of the French will not speak to you in their precious language if they know English. My recommendation would be for German. It's different enough from the romance languages that it will broaden your language base. It's hard to sound like a native speaker in German, but the rules of pronunciation are straightforward. Having said that, I was amazed at the number of students in my college 1st yr German who couldn't get a few basic things straight all year! Anyway, my 2 cents.
