I think one of the great ironies of all this is that the late Dick Grossman, who used to be the original(?) editor of the Saab Club Nines newsletters, had his "Five Minutes of Hate" column which usually ended up being directed at GM (this was in the early 80s, iirc), and how they were the complete antithesis of the Saab philosophy.
Nowadays, I'm with the bunch that acknowledges that without GM, Saab probably still wouldn't be here. Sure they made Saab hang onto the NG900/9-3 chassis too long, but hey, I am one of those "conflicted" types
that has BOTH a C900 and a 9-3, and I love them both for what they can do, even if those things are slightly different. And I'm willing to face facts, the 9-3 may lack some things in the chassis dynamics dept. But it STILL corners faster (though not flatter!) than the 900, has skads of character and utility vs. the usual ToyoNissondas, AND it gets better gas mileage while having a whopping 50% more hp and torque vs. my old C900S.
Just remember, it wouldn't necessarily be roses and honey if someone else, like FORD, had bought Saab. We might have had the NG900/9-3 built on an Escort platform:-)! Not to mention the quality control rap that Ford and Volvo have been taking lately.
I've got a coworker who has teased me for years about my "Saabrolet", but then, I've kept the C900 going for 14 years, while in that time he's bought three domestic cars against my one Swedish one.
My two kronor....
