If you want a 5 speed American car, your choices are very, very limited. You'll be lucky to find one on a dealer lot, and most likely will have to order one. No big deal, but a wait of 2 months.
The Focus LX5 (5 door) is a real beauty, although it costs almost as much as the wagon which would be more useful. Their ride is similar to a european car's, but not nearly as good as a Saab's.
That's it for Ford. Chrysler makes a Neon (real piece of junk) and a PT Cruiser with a manual trans. The PT is a pretty nice ride, although it is a statement rather than a real car. Kinda fun though.
On the GM side, the only remaining 5 speeds are the Chevy Cavalier, a truly awful car, and the Saturns. The Saturn L has a SAAB 5 speed transmission! It also has SAAB brakes. I owned one for a year and really liked it, but the interior is pretty boring.
So I'd say go for the Focus 5 door. Its a very interesting design.
