Well, with a ceiling of $325/mo on a lease, you actually have decent options, although leasing isn't what it used to be either.
Seriously, consider the Cougar. It may be what you're looking for.
In the 2-3 month time frame the Pontiac Vibe should be widely available - as much as I dislike Pontiac's styling, this seems to be a decent car, and with a Toyota base it should be good and reliable. The reviews have said stay with the base engine on that car though - the high-revving Toyota optional motor doesn't fit the character of the car, so they say.
The Focus SVT may be your best bet, if you can get one.
I had a Neon for a day yesterday - decent for what it is, but it's still a cheap econobox.
On the Escape, it may not even fit the budget - they don't lease well. Ditto the Liberty I think.
