Well, I visited the Toyota web page today in search of information on the Matrix and what did I see but a link to the RAV4 EV--a new version of the RAV4 that's completely electric. They're only selling them in California (and I'm not sure when they're starting sales, perhaps they're already on sale...) and they're setting up 100 recharging locations around San Fransisco and Los Angeles.
Granted, the car only goes 126 miles on a charge, takes 6.5 hours to charge (they include a home-charging system), and the car has a max speed of 78 mph, but it's zero emissions! Also, with a $42000 price tag, many will be turned away, but I think that we'll start seeing more of these (Ford has been promising the release of an electric version of the Escape for a while now...) and as more are developed, the price will be more affordable. Furthermore, there are apparently rebate incentives from the California Air Resources Board of up to $9000, so that would help defray the costs. There are other quirks, like being allowed to drive in the carpool lane--alone.
I think it's a step in the right direction... I may not be in the position to get one yet, and it may not be a Saab (I mean, really, who would want a RAV4 over a Saab?), but it's still very intriguing.
