It was nice of Canada to win after fifty years, a few days from my fiftieth birthday…. They really outplayed the US and it was GREAT hockey. But I have trouble feeling a lot of pride as a Canadian, as all these players are now American millionaires. Nothing wrong with that, but it definitely tints my outlook on men’s hockey at the Olympics.
I think millionaire Bettman has done more harm to the game than anybody in the history of the league, created in Montreal in 1917. It was so nice to see clean fast hockey in contrast with the wresting-on-ice circus the NHL has become. And yet, they were the same players. I am sure the American show business orientation, spearheaded by Bettman, who needs a freak show to convince people who don’t know anything about hockey that it’s an exciting game, has a lot to do with the deterioration of the game. In that sense, the expansion into the US has been a disaster.
More importantly, owning a sports team in the US is tax deductible, while in Canada, it's a tax-generating endeavour, so I wouldn’t necessarily blame the Americans as such: our fiscal differences just make it impossible for Canadian teams to compete in this environment, on top of which they have to pay their millionaires in real (US) dollars. There is so much you can siphon from hard working folks to attend a game that has turned sour, so even the remaining Canadian teams are living on borrowed time. I think it would be time to recreate a National (Canadian) Hockey League but the big money will always attract the better players South. Call it a catch 22. As for the Canadian girls who get 1000$ a month for playing hockey, they are pure gold! Perhaps our multi-millionaires could share a little with them aye….
