I'll brave your wrath! I first came to love Saabs for their uniqueness, (at
the time), and fell for those promotional ads showing horses pulling a wagon versus hitched up behind etc. but after driving FWD for many years,
and experiencing that feeling in the winter when you get stopped in traffic
at the crest of a hill and start up, just to churn yourelf into a 180 degree circle. I have also raced RWD and FWD and discovered the contortions
one has to go through to get around a corner fast, (fighting the torque steer with one hand, while pulling on the emergency brake with the other.
After years of these experiences, I have come to the conclusion that FWD is
contrary to the laws of Nature, asking the front end to do to much in providing power, steering and keeping the CG of all that weight from going
in the ditch when you turn left. Thats why CV joints are almost a given to
wear out in FWD. I remember a good handling car was the Pontiac Tempest in
the '60's that had the Trans/diff. at the rear, motor at the front and the
connection between them was a thin solid steel rod running in two ball bearings. It had 50/50 weight distribution. Porsche also was no dummy.
Of course mid engine provides the ideal, but with the sacrifice of space for passengers and ease of access. I concur that FWD does have a place: in
light, economical vehicles designed for economy and passenger space in a
small car.
