You do not have to go as far as Europe to start on this question. Canada has a national health plan.
At the statistical and policy level. we have far better national health statistics than the U.S. and we spend much less per capita on the system mainly because in the U.S. a major part of health care dollars goes to administration and lawyers. Employers find the national system cheaper than the U.S. model because corporate health insurance plans for employees are unnecessary.
At the personal level, I can tell you that bringing up a family is much less strenuous when you know that everything from the birth of children, through preventive check ups to emergency care will not affect your pocket book. And to counter some of the scare stories you may have read, our family has always found the system to deliver timely, personal and efficient service.
