While riding my motorcycle I am more tuned in to other drivers b/c of the higher risks involved if a crash. I notice in contrast how I tune-out while driving the box. By far the most dangerous 1.5 tons on the road is a cage and a cell phone. I can spot a cell phone driver from 1/2 mile away by the lane-drift of the car, the slow, no signal lane change, and usually driving too slow for conditions. Easily 80% of near misses on the cycle are with cell phone drivers. A person playing with the radio is distracted for a few seconds, a cell phone driver several minutes. The reports I have seen bear this out. The only time I used a cell phone driving, I realized that I did not remember how I got where I wound-up. Never again.
Standing on the platform waiting for the train in the morning, next to the expressway, I can see cagers on phones in the traffic, they all, without exception, have a blank stare, usually looking at the dash and not straight ahead (or, looking at some paper on which they are also writing). A drunk is dangerous because he is unconscious. A cell is dangerous because he thinks he is conscious, but is not. Hang up.
