yes, I agree that cell phones distract the driver more then anything else. Even hands free kits are distracting. I use a phone for work A LOT, and have been in more then 1 situation where I notice that even with a hands free kit (the good ones, not the 19.95 ones) I am not paying as much attention to the road.
One company decided it should install the hands free in all of its cars. This is a very good idea, but it is still harder to talk to someone on a phone then someone sitting next to you. I don't know why!
As far as being worse then a DD, I'd say no. Did the study ever try to hang up the phone? There's an idea! I've ended many a conversation when entering high traffic areas, but I don't think a driver can sober up just to merge lanes!
