Well, if hatchbacks sold like pancakes, SAAB would continue selling them. As it stands, the American market (because everywhere else this is not an issue), sedans and now even wagons-sell. Hatchbacks (we're talking 4dr hatchbacks)-regardless of how practical-have never been accepted by the American car buying public.
From a marketing standpoint, selling sedans (and wagons) make sense. It's not gonna be real popular for the stuck in the past long time SAAB owners, but that's not the market they're trying to capture. Selling 130k cars worldwide annually just doesn't cut it. They need to attract the unwashed masses to the marque, and this is the way to do it. If the so called "traditionalists" reject it-so be it. More often than not, they're trying got preserve the SAABs they have and are not interested in buying the "new fangled" GM made vehicles made in Sweden.
As far as some are concerned, SAAB stopped being SAAB when they gave up on two stroke engines...forget this C900 vs NG900 stuff ;-)
