The Matrix/Vibe are quasi minivans, not a hatch in the classic sense. Lexus intro'ed the IS300 hatchback for unknown reasons. I've only seen one since it's been out-so they can't be popular. Same with the MP5. BMW had the 318ti a few years ago that was a bust in the US but sells like gangbusters in Europe.

Point is that with the exception of the Matrix/Vibe, the other cars are complementary models to their notchback counterparts. For a time, SAAB only sold hatchbacks, and for reasons unknown-never caught on with the broader car buying market.

SAAB-in order to survive as a viable car company, needs to appeal to that broader market. Like it or not. If that means getting rid of the hatchback for now, so be it. I'll miss it, but not as much as I'd miss buying another SAAB if they went out of business following the path you suggest.

I'd hate to get a Brick (can I still call them that?)....
