follow the pipe back toward the source (water meter or hot water heater). Somewhere you should find a union. If you take the union apart you will be able to unscrew the pipes up to the shower. If it is galvanized it is most likely restricted with corrosion and rust. If it's 1/2" ID pipe you may have 1/4" opening. especially on the hot water pipes. If you can replace as much of the galvanized pipe as you can with copper.
How old is the house? It is pretty unusual to find threaded galvanized or black iron used in anything built since the 50's.
