It does NOT work that way in the real world. You are basically asking a Saab dealer to give you a new car for practically nothing so you can drive the "new' off it, thus wrecking its resale value. The initial depreciation of a new car is incredibly high - once you sign the papers and drive the car off the lot, its value drops precipitously. You also have to pay registration and sales taxes (all those "other" expenses you often don't consider), which is money down the drain if you don't plan on keeping the car.
No dealer on this planet is going to go for that idea.
Spend the money to fix up your C900 - change the belts and fluids and have the engine and drivetrain checked out by a good Saab mechanic. Make sure the tires are in good shape. Fix any critical problems. And join the AAA so you will have roadside help if the worst does happen. Carry a cell phone and some basic spares and tools, then enjoy your trip. Most likely nothing will go wrong. If it does, just deal with it! That is part of the mystique of a long road trip. No matter what you do to prepare, there is always the unexpected. What can go wrong, will...so just do it!
The alternatives are to buy the new car for the lowest down payment and lowest monthly payment you can manage. That is not good financial thinking.
Or if you really, really don't trust your current car, rent a new car and go worry free. If it blows up in the middle of the desert, the nearest Hertz will give you a new one ;) $1000 is not _that_ much for a month vacation travel cost.
