(1) processor speed really means nothing. BUS speed is what is important. I'm involved in biophysics research involving simulations running on parallel computers and tell you from experience that there is not a noticable difference between the SGI processors running at 400MHz or 800MHz. You'll certainly never notice it in your laptop. Bus speed is the rate at which data gets to and from the processor. What does it matter if the processor runs at 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0GHz if the data transfer to and from the processor is a measely 100-200MHz? This is the lie every computer company likes to perpetuate. You'd do much better to buy lots of extra RAM - note though that playing games on laptops really sucks because of the small, slowly refreshing screen.
(2) Don't blow off an Apple so soon. I laughed at them through college, but now as a graduate student I don't have the time to dick around with Linux or the endless stream of updates windows spews every day. A mac will do everything your PC does, just as fast and probably in a more beautiful way. Oh, and once you're a registered student you get an educational discount that brings the price of an ibook with a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive down to $1600. It will be more beautiful than any computer you've ever seen and your friends will always ask to borrow it.
