Go with separate sets for fair weather and winter. As far as performance goes, you don't need the best in order to be happy. Determine what your driving habits are like and review the ties available from the Tire Rack. They have a lot of good info on their site.
Tires I have tried on my 1997 900SET:
Stock Michelins
Bridgestone RE730 (loud! replaced by Bridgestone)
Bridgestone RE730 Gen2 (great tire)
Nokia snows (forget model - Hakkapeliitta??)
Goodyear Ultra Grip 5 (or something like that)
I like to try to get the best bang for the buck, instead of opting for the best, highest priced options.
The Goodyears are superb in the snow. A friend of mine that has the same Saab (convinced him to get one) has used both Bridgestone and Goodyears for snow duty and has said that the Goodyears (same as mine) are just as good, or very, very, very close. This includes travel time on Ontario/Quebec highways in snowstorms going to Quebec for some ski time.
In either case make sure to stick to speed ratings that are appropriate to the car. Performance tires should be V, Z, W, etc. and snows should be at least H rated. If you get T or S rated snows, you will notice the difference in handling.
Regards,
Theo
