After living in Germany for several years and driving friends rear wheel drive cars with snow tires and my front wheel drive honda with all-season tires and my Saab with summer tires, I can tell you that snow tires make a HUGE difference. The biggest difference is being able to stop. The Saab with summer tires could not make it up small hills after it snowed. The honda with all seasons was ok, but you had to drive slow and brake early. The rear drive MB and BMW's with winter tires had no problem getting around. I was much more confident in my ability to stop when decending hills, etc.
If I lived in a snow belt (Austin Texas never gets snow) I would not hesitate getting snow tires. My life is worth more then $400.
