In a 9-3 with studded hakkas, and in a Viggen with stock tires (yeh I had to try it and haven't done it again), I can stop much quicker on ice and snow WITHOUT using ABS. Like at least 20% shorter. To do this, I gently brake almost to the amount required to activate ABS, and I slow down smoothly and efficiently. Perhaps its due to years of practice in non ABS vehicles in the snow.
I still like having ABS on those cars since it does permit more control when steering and braking. In the 9-3, you can let go of the steering wheel and mash the brake pedal to the floor on a snow covered road, and you will come to a stop without going off the road or changing direction. You can also steer while the brake pedal is down. If you don't want ABS, just go a little easier on the pedal. ABS and big Viggen brakes and tires are quite impressive on dry pavement! You stop quick! A quality ABS systems like Saab uses is very good on dry pavement. To argue about which is better on dry pavement on the street is either personal preference or nitpicking.
