All the reasons you list are the ones that caused me to go for the empeg/Rio Car instead of one of the other units. I just couldn't see settling for CD-changer-type controls, one level of playlist, and an 8-character display.
So I'm curious: are you including the empeg in your judgement? I don't think you could ask for a bigger display in a single-DIN unit. It has many different display modes that can present all the relevant data about the song being played (artist, title, album, year), position in the track, time played/left, number of tracks in the playlist and the current track number, as well as all kinds of eye candy if you're bored with watching the road. I would love to have song lyrics and album art, but I think the latter is a bit unrealistic and the former will take a little more hacking (I'm think of this for a future project).
Its navigation seems very easy to me--just a couple of pushes on its very accessible buttons to get to the desired playlist, album, or song, or to navigate the options menus.
I can't vouch for the empeg's "flawless playback" on the road yet, but it works great in the house, and since it has lots of shock absorbtion and uses laptop hard drives, I have to believe it will handle anything that normal on-road driving would throw at it.
Overall, I think it's head and shoulders above the rest, and I sure hope Sonic Blue revives it so that it can get the market it deserves (or at least force the big boys to get their act together).
