The auto magazines' audiences are, IMHO, the "my car is my identity" types who generally buy BMWs, Nissan/Infinity, Corvettes, and other "performance" cars.
A very tiny percentage of their readership probably drives a Saab. So the mags do not want to alienate their readers. If they negatively reviewed a BMW, they'd get numerous angry letters and subscription cancellations. And BMW would pull out those lovely glossy two page inside-the-cover ads.
The magazines also sell a lot of ads to those companies that sell aftermarket parts (wheels, exhausts, chips) to the "identity" market. Generally, I don't see many tricked out Saabs. Hey, they're perfect already!
So if a real competitor comes along that is going to sell just about 20,000 cars vs. BMW's or Nissan's hundreds of thousands, do you think it would be in the magazine's best interest to give it a great review? Not bloody likely!
Those reviews are so subjective, they are trash anyway. I'd like to know about durability, ease of maintenance, and other real world attributes of a car, not its 0-60 time or how many HP can be tweaked out of the engine at its max RPM. Those stats aren't useful at all.
