The wireless router was about $170 here in MN (probably cheaper online) I use a 3COM WLAN ($100) pcmcia card and also a Linksys pcmcia card ($70)in my linux laptop, my hubby's desktop is connected to a hub (via ethernet cable) that is connected to the router. Linksys is nice because its wifi and will work right out of the box and with any other wifi components, tho I recommend configuring it so not everyone in your neighborhood is surfing on your channel 6. PCI or ISA cards for a desktop are a lot less expensive than PCMCIA cards so that will save you a few bucks if you have 2 desktops.
You can network XP and 98 to share files. Its not a problem. Just make sure that you use the "windows login" and supply a username and password when you login. Then there is no problem.
