The auto press is aglow with praise for the VW Tourag (imo -- its even uglier than the Cayenne). And the Volvo just won SUV (car?) of the year.
So -- maybe the Cayenne is a great vehicle. If it p e r fo r m s -- it will be an asset to the brand, even if a few very wealthy soccer Moms drive them!
What can Saab learn about this? Stick to its performance heritage -- bring others "into the club" with great vehicles -- and please, please -- don't just rebadge a current GM product to be the Saab SUV. If anything -- the latest round of SUVs from Honda, Lexus, Volvo, Porsche, VW have raised the bar even higher. Too high to do a less than great job. (can you imagine the fear at Daimler Chrysler over its POS Jeep and ML Suv's right now! Old models with horrendous reliability)
The reality is - the new Saab SUV will need to be *at least* as good as the Volvo, and at a similar price point (which is no higher than the 9-5).
I wonder how Saab much contributes to the corporate CAFE? For every 25 - 30 mpg Saab sold in the US it gets to sell how many 10 - 15 mpg monster SUV's? (kind of ironic that we probably help GM sell Suburbans & Tahoes!)
