which was a much better riding and handling car.

When my wife decided that our new family "needed" a wagon, the search began (we couldn't stomach a minivan and we are in the "hate SUVs" camp, hence, the wagon as the people/stuff hauler). After over 1 month of test drives and research, we had it narrowed to V70, XC70, and 9-5. 2 Months later, we bought the SAAB.

Even though I'm quite the SAABophile (currently driving a 90 SPG--the latest in a 17 year history of SAABs), after looking at a GM900 in 97 (and being quite unimpressed) and again in 2000, I swore I would never buy a GM SAAB. So, I certainly didn't push the 9-5.

The XC70 was considered because we live in a very SUV happy place and my wife wanted to have a fighting chance of seeing around them without buying one. She figured the extra height would help.

Bottom line, the SAAB beat them both in our opinion. It was a much better value (features to price) especially with the SAAB incetives on right now. It drove/handled and rode substantially better than the XC70 and better than the V70. The the seats are buttery soft, and the utility is better in my opinion (love the cargo tracks!). The SAAB 9-5 is now a cosumer reports recommended car. SAAB beats Volvo in the JD Powers Initial Quality report, and the SAAB 9-5 was the JD Powers best mid-lux initial quality car in (I believe) 2001.

I urge you to give the 9-5 wagon a try. Many in the snowiest/iciest regions have complimented it's front wheel drive's road holding capabilities. The 9-5 is a substantially better car than the GM900. Less problems and much better driving feel. I think you might like it. We of course got the SAAB I4, not the GM V6 -- I am a SAABophile after all! ;-)
