My wife drives a '99 V70R. Not an XC, but AWD. Bottom line, Volvos and Saabs may both be Swedish companies that build cars that compete in the same price range, but they are very different beasts. Volvos are safe, (usually) reliable driving appliances. Even though the V70R has Volvo's top of the line, 2.3L, I-5 engine making 236 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, the transmission and the suspension take a lot of the "wow" out of driving the car.
Now, having said that, I feel really good about her hauling the 3 kids around in this car. We have had no reliability problems, although I know others have (I've heard more complaints about the XC, BTW). It's a great family cruiser that I happily drive on the week-ends, but it's NEVER gonna make me forget about my 9-5 Aero. Even my wife, who is not a big-time car person, has commented on how much more fun it is to drive the Saab.
If you care about performance, buy the Saab. If you don't, buy the car that's the better deal.
That's my $.02, anyway.
