I went through this same process about this time last year, and I agree with Irie Tom on the cat5.
I too, have a wife, and a 2 and 5 year old. I had jacks put in my study, our bedroom, and the family room. The box they put in down in the basement combined with the router I purchased (about $60) would allow adding more in the future.
I now have a second computer, and the convenience is great. Good luck, Erik
