Take a look at the long-term test of the Xterra on edmunds.com. Under powered is pretty much the only major complaint. You could get the SC but I have heard it’s not much better.
Another option is the Pathfinder SE. It has a better engine and is much more refined. Of course, it also has a much bigger sticker price. I think they run about $3-4k more than a Xterra SE-V6 (only about $1k more than the Xterra SC). If your deal for Xterra is from a dealer see what they can do on a Pathfinder as well.
Of course, the 9-3 and the Xterra are two totally different animals. Have you looked at a pre-owned 9-5 wagon? If you don’t mind slightly used this could be a good alternative as well.
