Hi Mark,
We use Xterra's on our research team - and they work hard in off-road situations. They are wonderful -real low range, lots of wheel travel - hose them out. But they are a universe apart from a 9-3, or any car for that matter. Even optioned out, they ride harsh, have lots of wind noise, and their short wheel base provides "hobby-horse" fun on our New England highways. Don't get me wrong, they are Jeeps with all of the bugs sorted out and a bit of civilization added for your sanity. The pathfinder suggestion might lead to a better fit...
In addition, please don't laugh or suggest that I increase my therapy, but I urge you to check out the Kia Sorento - its lavish and comfortable in a shamefully affordable package. It has no low range transfer case and not a lot of wheel travel - but its not designed for ass-kicking off-road adventures. For most people,it has all of the awd capacity needed. Think - Honda Pilot without the mark-up.
Good luck
eric
