Bill,
I am not a website guru, but from my limited experience at work with scanning in documents, I have learned that you do not want to opt for the "bitmap" (.bmp) version. The file size ranges from enormous to humongous with bitmaps. Use the "JPEG" (.jpeg) format; this produces perfectly useable resolution, and keeps the file size to something acceptable (makes for quicker viewing/downloads, too.
