When it's Monday and you want to promise the car on Tuesday afternoon, promise instead on Thursday morning, then deliver on Wednesday morning. Sure as heck something (many things) will prevent you from making the Tuesday deadline. I'm happy when my car's ready a day early. I'm sad and frustrated when my car's two days late. When my car is ready a day early I tell two or three people. When my car is two days overdue I tell thirteen people - national average of customer comments on receiving good/bad service. You already know you're dealing with a small piece of the pie, and a quite close-knit crowd at that. If you do well, word will get around.

When you deal with customers, look them in the eye. If you don't they will think you are lying.

Always remember, your customers ARE your business, they are not a distraction from your business. We all know many people have this backwards.

When you need help in the shop, hire someone, even though you may think it's impossible to work them in to the expenses, it will harm you most of all if you do not. When you stretch yourself so thin that you begin forgetting deadlines and failing to order parts it will not be immediately apparent until one day you notice your regular customers are no longer regular.

When someone asks you to do something, write it down. There is no way you will remember everyone's requests.

Don't even try to plan writing checks to pay your vendors, the electric company, the phone bill, etc. during business hours. It's not going to happen. Set a half hour aside at the beginning of the day before you open to do this.

Hopefully, none of this is news to you. If it is, be thankful someone told you going in and not the other way around. I wish you luck. Sometimes it's going to be hard, try to live a balanced life. And welcome to the club, I think you'll find that this experience will teach you more than you ever imagined!
