I'm in full agreement with you on low profile tires. One reason I enjoy the Miata so much is that I can drive the heck out of it and slide it around corners and still be in control. Even thought the 225/50 Toyos on my Saab give it more grip than the Miata, the break away characteristics are much more sudden. I have to stay well within the limits of the tire to feel safe, which isn't nearly as much fun. Even the Camry I learned to drive on was fully controllable to 10/10th and thus I could push it as hard as I wanted and still feel in control (though I wouldn't exactly say it was fun). I haven't driven anything with 17" plus tires, but I imagine the effect is even more sudden breakaway characteristics.
