The ability to grip is the compound of the tire.
The quickness to turn (ie input to tire response) is the side wall.
These can't be confused.
A low profile tire is considered to be a performance tire and therefore manufactured with a softer compound. But this is not to say a higher profile tire does not have the ability for performance. Regrettfully Craig, the Miata you drove probably had a harder tire then what your Saab has.
I don't want to bash people, and I'm not a tire expert, but these are some observations I've made.
Car fashion has made the low profile tire look fast. Fifteen years ago high-performance cars (F1, Indy...) had a low profile tire. But the public sector was running 75 series tires on there vehicle, so of course they looked low profile. Look at the profiles of todays high-performance and compare them to the 35 and 40 series tires on the streets. The Ferrari f1 has a huge profile in comparison. Of all racing, if there was a performance edge to low profile, F1 would have them.
About 5 years ago I raced asphalt Go-karts regionally and nationally. We went through the same hype of low-profile tires. Did we run 5" wheels or 6" wheels was the question. The 6" rims fitted a lower profile tire in the same compounds as the 5". If there was a lot of rubber on the track, the 6" drove easier, but not faster. Times didn't improve with the 6" wheels. We just paid more money for the 6" tires. We had no tire restrictions meaning the stickiest tires we could get. In the end, 5" higher profile tire is all asphalt karters use now.
So be carefull of the low profile hype. It's the compound of the tire that gives them grip.
Terry
