Totally agreed... I'm sure the R32 will be a nice car, but VW's engineering has quite a bit to be desired. The 3.2l VR6 is hardly a stellar performer - my 8 year old Alfa produces the same power from a smaller engine. The CL Type S makes 20 more hp from the same displacement. I'm not impressed. 4Motion is pretty cool, but in terms of AWD technology it's awfully heavy for what it delivers. Subaru's system delivers 90% of the function at 60% of the weight. Mitsubishi's system is comparable at 80% of the weight. And I don't think anyone needs to be reminded about VW's recent quality issues... :)
As for street performance, I would not be worried about putting a FWD car up against an AWD car. Yeah, you'll get more reliable performance from AWD, but with only 240hp to deal with FWD isn't too big of a limitation. As was pointed out, the old 9000 Aero was tested with a 6.2 0-60, and I believe it was Nordic or some other Saab tuner that got one down to 5.8s. That's enough of a margin to leave the new R32 owner feeling very inadequate. Fact is, if you want to go fast in a straight line, buy a Mustang. Cheap and fast. In terms of track performance, there is very little evidence showing that an AWD car has any real advantage over a properly set up FWD or RWD car. AWD is more predictable and more forgiving, but in the hands of a competant driver I wouldn't put too much faith in AWD. Damien S (posts on the Perf board) has smacked around plenty of Quattros on the track in his 16 year old SPG.
