Chris,
I live in Charles Co., MD. We moved here from Germany four and a half years ago, and the following is a general list of impressions of the area, in no specific order: PG county is a crime-ridden expansion of D.C., high crime rate, police force under FBI investigation for having such a high rate of brutality charges, schools that are beyond failing, rampant corruption (almost as bad as the D.C. govt.). This does not make Charles Co. a paradise by any stretch of the imagination, however. Some of the elementary schools are good, most of the middle (junior high) and all the high schools have full-time truant officers (uniformed cops). The level of Maryland county and state government services are abominable. My impression is that Virginia has a much more sqared-away program across the board. People are more polite, friendlier than in MD. You have to understand that Charles and parts of PG counties have their roots in tobacco farming; all of the cultural attributes associated with that heritage are still very much evident. To tell you the truth, I could go on and on. My communte to Arlington, VA each day consists of 30 miles each way, and barring any accidents or other stupidity on the road (for example, my kids were sent home early from school one day last year because "it was raining hard" - D.C.ers cannot deal with any time of precipitation - its so "dangerous"), I usually manage to make it in about 45 to 50 minutes. All things being equal, however, I want to move to Virginia. If you want more rantings, drop me a line.
