Chris,
I moved to Calvert County this summer, and work as a guidance counselor at a high school here. (Patuxent High School, which is near solomons island that another poster mentioned).
PG county schools are having serious problems right now, I believe their school board was disbanded, and taken over by the state board. All sorts of administrative problems. I would be very cautious about taking a job there right now.
I am not as familiar with Charles county schools. Another counselor at my HS worked there for 5 years, and liked it, her husband still teaches elementary there. I would say that your wife would be better off in charles vs. PG. (just my opinion).
I have attached a link to the Maryland State Department of Education site that has links to each school district. The map on the page shows the location of each county.
As a shameless plug for my county: I love working in calvert county! This is my first year here, after working in NY and NC previously. Our pay is second only to Montgomery County. While my school is at the southern tip of the county, I live in the center of the county in Huntingtown. When it is not rush hour, it takes me just under an hour to get to the heart of DC (52 mins to GW university is my record). The only problem with living down here is that it is fairly rural, and if you are used to shopping malls and starbucks, you will go crazy. As you get closer to PG county there are more services. This is a beautiful area, with the patuxent river on the west, and the chesapeake bay on the east. I am living in a beach community on the bay, and love being by the water.
I would also recommend a visit to the area. The montgomery county and northern VA areas on the NW side of dc are in my experience very over crowded, and traffic is nuts, even in the suburban towns. the SE side of most cities is usually a less desirable area, and as another poster mentioned, PG county has its ups and downs..The city/town of Bowie has a great location midway between DC/Baltimore . People are starting to discover this side of the city, our school district is the fastest growing district in the state.
Finally, Anne Arundel County is another place to look into. They have a good school system (I have been told).
I am sorry if I have been rambling incoherently (its getting late), if you have any other questions for me, feel free to email me.
Regards,
Brian
