Beyond certain minor factual errors (confusing ILSAC and API certifications) and ACEA grade enforcement, the article is mostly bland.
To safely engage in extended oil drain intervals, one must either employ on-board oil-life monitoring, or employ periodic oil analyses ***and*** have regular and consistent driving patterns. The latter costs more than just changing oil more often (although it's neat to have the data).
On board oil life monitoring can be done using either a sensor that measures the rate of change in the dielectric constant of the oil or a computational algorithm in the car computer (like the 9-3 SS). The latter requires that the owner use the type of oil which matches the algorithm. Mrs. G's Olds is calibrated for conventional oil, lights up at around 6000 miles usually, and does not display "remaining life". The 9-3 SS is calibrated to Mobil 1, and does display remaining life, for those who prefer to be a little conservative.
FOr the rest of us, we just change oil more often than necessary and drive happily ever after.
But then, we all know this...
